  5.     As a clergyman and a leading spokesman for mixed-race South
  6. Africans, the Rev. Allan Boesak was known for invoking his
  7. moral authority to speak against apartheid. That authority all
  8. but evaporated last week when he was forced to resign his
  9. ministry after the press disclosed that he was having an
  10. extramarital affair with a television producer, Elna Botha, 30.

  12.     The minister, who is expected to be divorced by his wife of
  13. 21 years, tearfully announced the resignation to his stunned
  14. congregation at the Dutch Reformed Mission Church near Cape
  15. Town. But he assured his parishioners that he had done "nothing
  16. immoral." The African National Congress said it is
  17. "reassessing" his role in the liberation struggle. And the Cape
  18. Times suggested that the scandal might benefit Boesak's
  19. political fortunes: "A little humility did nobody any harm."
